AMPUTATIONS Forefoot/Toe Amputations
·Diabetes is a major cause of forefoot/toe amputations. Various traumas are another common cause. ·A properly constructed and properly placed toe or forefoot filler on an accommodative orthotic is of great importance to the diabetic or neuropathic patient. A forefoot filler for a Trans Metatarsal Amputation (TMA) is often an effective solution in... 1) Preventing the shoe from unnaturally collapsing and possibly causing irritation on the distal or dorsal area of the foot. 2) Helping to prevent the foot from excessively moving around in the shoe, which in turn may cause ulcers in other areas. ·Toe fillers or fillers for an amputated ray may prevent excessive foot motion inside the shoe. It may also prevent the remaining toes from ''drifting.'' To Order ·To order a ''filler'' simply check the box for ''Toe or Forefoot Filler'' under ''Specialty Items'' on our prescription form. Then order an appropriate accommodative orthotic ie. ''Multi-Density Diabetic Orthotic'' ·It is helpfull to our lab technicians if you darken in the amputated area on the ''Foot Drawings'' portion of the prescription form. NOTE ·A foam casting box works well for capturing these forefoot amputations accurately. ·Sending the shoe or shoes along with the cast is also helpful so that we can precisely fit both the orthotic and the forefoot filler to the patient's shoe. |
