GRINDING

Grinding

·The grinding department takes the shell (arch support) portion of the device and modifies and refines it in numerous ways.

Modifications and refinements include:

·Accurately marking the ''landmarks'' on the cast.

·Transferring the cast marks to the shell.

·Cutting the shell on a saw to an approximate shape of the finished product, paying special attention to the depth of the heel cup and height and shape of the medial and lateral flanges that have been prescribed.

·Using large industrial belt sanding machines to grind the shell to an exact shape that will fit properly in a shoe and function according to what the clinic has prescribed.

·A heel post is vacuum formed to the bottom of the shell under the heel if prescribed.

·The heel post is ground down in an effort to ensure as low a profile in the shoe as possible while still aiding in the stabilization of the foot.

·A protective cap is laminated to the bottom of the heel post. It is then trimmed and buffed.

·The inside of the shell is abraded so the adhesive for the top covering will adhere properly.
